About Kokkino Chorio
Kokkino Chorio is (The Red Village) anchored to a dramatic hillside in one of the most scenic areas in Crete. Stunning sea views all the way down Souda Bay and extraordinary views of the snow-covered Lefka Ori mountain, and a kaleidoscope of red soil, green vineyards, silver olive groves and golden sunsets.
The surrounding area itself tells a story of the history of Crete. One of the caves, located next to St.George’s Church, was used by the Nazis as an artillery spotting position during the German occupation.
It is located a few minutes from the neighbouring villages of Plaka, Almyrida, Kefalas and Kalyves.
The historic Venetian Port towns of Chania and Rethymnon are just 30 minutes drive from the village.
Kokkino Chorio is the village where a part of the filming of the movie “Zorba The Greek” took place in 1964.
This legendary movie is starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, and Sotiris Moustakas, was filmed on Crete, mainly in the Chania regional unit, with many locations around Kokkino Chorio.
Some of the elder villagers today were children in the Zorba film and can share memories with you in the local taverna Yannis.

Looking for a quiet place in nature with magnificent views?
This is an amazing place up in the hills, surrounded by mountains, views of the sea and the beautiful sound of sheep-bells. Joan and John are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make sure your time spent is relaxing. From the wonderful breakfast with homemade bread, to lovely chats with Joan, you are sure to enjoy your time.
Close enough to restaurants and shops and well situated for exploring central and western Crete. Chania is 30minutes away. All in all, I will say that if you want a bit of a “closer to nature” stay coupled with their lovely hospitality, then Alpha House is the place.
Just 2 km from Kokkino Chorio in neighbouring village Kambia, a most wonderful British lady Joan owes a beautiful house. She rents a few rooms out.

Kamilari - a quiet traditional village in southern Crete
Due to its location away from mass tourism, Kamilari kept its traditional, Cretan character.
You will find here great tavernas and typical Greek cafés with a friendly atmosphere – a true gourmet’s paradise!
Kamilari is very pretty and scenic, with all the features of a typical Cretan village: a small main square, a church and colourful kafeneia full of character, frequented by locals and visitors alike.
The natural site of Kamilari, spread over four hills, also gives it a particular beauty, with gorgeous views of the mountain tops, the Libyan Sea and the Messara plain.
The geographical situation of the village, in the south centre of the island, constitutes a very convenient place to stay, especially for those who plan to make daily trips to the numerous and different spots of interest of Crete, like for example Iraklio, Rethymno, the Psiloritis mountain, Preveli, or simply walks in gorges or towards small beaches, etc.
The long, sandy beach of Kalamaki and Komos, as well as the archaeological sites of Festos and Agia Triada, are some 4 kilometres from Kamilari.
The village is approx an hour drive from Heraklion airport and is strategically situated between the well known tourist villages of Agia Galini (10km) and Matala (15km).
