“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
/ Hippocrates
Greece is not only the birthplace of European civilization and democracy.
There was already in ancient Greece a great understanding about human’ well-being, health and beauty in connection to what we eat.
Hippocrates of Kos was a Greek physician who lived from about 460 B.C. to 375 B.C. and established the first academic school to teach medicine and thus is known as the “father of medicine”.
Back then most people attributed sickness to superstition and the wrath of the gods, but Hippocrates taught that all forms of illness had a natural cause.
Hippocrates was not the only one discovering the importance of food – Pythagoras, known as one of Greece’s greatest mathematicians and philosophers is considered the father of vegetarianism.
His diet was defined not only by what you eat but by how you harvest what you eat.
Key to the “how” is non-violence/ avoidance of cruelty.
